Before Gibbs Gardens Closes for Winter: Ball Ground's Late-Fall Calendar, From the Gardens to Gilmer Ferry Road

Before Gibbs Gardens Closes for Winter: Ball Ground's Late-Fall Calendar, From the Gardens to Gilmer Ferry Road

Ball Ground, about 17 miles from Big Canoe, has two fall schedules running at once, and they end at different times. Gibbs Gardens has a fixed end date. It shortens its week in mid-November and closes for winter at 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 29. Downtown Ball Ground's calendar runs past that date. It starts the season in the town's parks and garden, then moves onto Gilmer Ferry Road for a December parade. A new steakhouse is also being built on that road.

That gives a simple plan for the next eight weeks. Visit the Gardens while they're open, and save December for downtown.

The Gardens' Schedule Has a Hard Stop

Gibbs Gardens is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. all season. Its 2026 schedule changes twice before winter, according to the Gardens' hours of operation page:

  • October 1 through November 10: open Tuesday through Sunday.
  • November 11 onward: open Wednesday through Sunday, so Tuesdays drop off.
  • Thursday, November 26: closed for Thanksgiving.
  • Sunday, November 29 at 4 p.m.: the Gardens close for the winter.

The same page lists the Wednesday-through-Sunday schedule as running through November 30, but it also gives the winter closing as November 29 at 4 p.m. The closing line is the more specific one, so November 29 is the safer date to plan around.

The bloom calendar adds some urgency. The Gardens list Japanese maples from mid-October through mid-November, fall wildflowers from early September through November, and fall Encore azaleas from September through November. So the maples are at their best right around the time Tuesdays come off the schedule. A visit in the next four weeks catches the maple window and has the fullest choice of open days. After November 10 you lose a day each week. After Thanksgiving weekend the Gardens are closed until spring.

The downtown calendar doesn't print a year. Two of its dates are confirmed for 2026 elsewhere: the Garden Club lists Halloween in the Garden for Saturday, October 24, 2026, and the parade organizer lists the December 4 parade for 2026.

Spooktacular is the big family night of the season. The event page lists bounce houses, an obstacle course, hayrides, a foam party and trick-or-treating, and it encourages costumes. Destination Cherokee's listing puts the event at 177 Old Dawsonville Road, which is the address Downtown Ball Ground gives for City Park.

The next afternoon is quieter. Halloween in the Garden takes place at the Ball Ground Botanical Garden, and the Ball Ground Garden Club lists trunk-or-treating, face painting, games, photo props and candy for Saturday, October 24, 2026.

The Unplugged Sessions are the most regular events on the list. They take place at City Connection Park at 288 Gilmer Ferry Road. There are three between November 7 and November 21, at a mix of weekday-evening and Saturday-midday times.

The calendar gives dates and times for Movie in the Park and Light up the Night but doesn't name a venue or describe the program. Check Downtown Ball Ground's listings closer to each date for those details.

November 21 Is the Day Both Schedules Overlap

One Saturday fits both schedules. On November 21, Gibbs Gardens is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on its shortened late-November week. Downtown, Lunar Grove plays City Connection Park from noon to 2 p.m., and Light up the Night runs from 6 to 9 p.m.

That's the last Saturday the Gardens are open before Thanksgiving week. The Gardens close at 4 and Light up the Night starts at 6, so a morning at the Gardens, a midday set at City Connection Park and an evening downtown all fit without overlapping.

November 14 works much the same way, but in the other direction. Exercise in the Park runs in the morning, Movie in the Park runs that evening, and the Gardens are open in between.

After Thanksgiving weekend, one of the two schedules is finished.

After November 29, the Season Moves to Gilmer Ferry Road

The first big downtown event after the Gardens close takes over a street instead of a park. The 12th Annual March of the Toys Parade, which benefits Toys for Tots, is set for Friday evening, December 4, 2026, starting at 7 p.m. on Gilmer Ferry Road.

The next day, the season goes back to a familiar address. Christmas in Ball Ground 2026, a two-day downtown market, runs from noon on Saturday, December 5, through 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 6, at 215 Valley Street. That's the same address as the Botanical Garden, where Halloween in the Garden took place in October.

Gilmer Ferry Road keeps coming up in this calendar. City Connection Park, home of the Unplugged Sessions, is at 288 Gilmer Ferry. The parade runs down it. A few doors from the park, a century-old building is being turned into the restaurant most likely to bring people downtown after the holiday events are over.

What's Being Built at 235 Gilmer Ferry Road

WhatNow reported in late August that The Butcher & Bottle, an upscale Southern steakhouse, is adding a Ball Ground location at 235 Gilmer Ferry Road. It will be the brand's third location, and no exact opening timeline has been announced.

Hoodline's coverage gives a target of winter 2026, again with no firm date. Its headline says "Opens," but the article itself describes a planned opening.

The building matters as much as the restaurant. Hoodline describes the two-story brick structure as built around 1912. Citing a 2019 Facebook post, it says the building once held the town's first elevator, along with McKinney's Grocery, Densmore Furniture and Haithcock Well Drilling, plus a small side cafe and a hand-pump gas station in earlier years. The renovation includes a second-story seating area for up to 100 guests and an outdoor patio available for private rentals.

The other two locations are in Ellijay and Alpharetta. Hoodline reports the Alpharetta restaurant opened February 2, 2026, at 45 Roswell Street, the brand's first location outside Ellijay. The parent company, Intentional Expectations Hospitality Group, was founded by Adam Anacker and Brian Stanley, and Hoodline says the group positions its steakhouses as approachable, weekly dining spots rather than special-occasion destinations.

As of mid-October, The Butcher & Bottle is still coming, not open. If it hits its winter target, Gilmer Ferry Road will have a reason to visit after the parade is over.

The town is preparing for more traffic downtown, too. City of Ball Ground presentation slides dated May 14, 2026, show a proposed downtown parking lease: about 40 spaces, $68,500 in preparation costs and a five-year term. The slides record that the city was considering it, not that the lot was approved or built.

One Place That's Already Open on the Highway

For dinner on any night of this calendar, Northbound Tavern is already operating. Business Debut reported in April that it would replace Choate BBQ & Bar at 10150 Ball Ground Highway. The tavern's own site now lists Suite 201 at that address, daily hours and online ordering. It's on the highway rather than in the downtown core, so it's a stop on the drive in, not part of the walkable stretch along Gilmer Ferry and Valley Street.

Putting the Eight Weeks in Order

  1. Now through November 10: Gibbs Gardens is open Tuesday through Sunday, and the Japanese maples are in season.
  2. October 23 and 24: Spooktacular at City Park, then Halloween in the Garden on Valley Street.
  3. November 14 and 21: Saturdays when the Gardens and downtown both fit in one day.
  4. November 29 at 4 p.m.: Gibbs Gardens closes for winter.
  5. December 4 through 6: The parade on Gilmer Ferry Road, then the Christmas market at 215 Valley Street.
